Core Web Vitals have been an official Google ranking factor since 2021. Yet as of 2026, recent surveys show fewer than half of all mobile websites in Germany pass all three metrics at once. Here's what the three metrics actually measure, no jargon.
Three metrics,
one shared question.
All three Core Web Vitals metrics ultimately answer one question: does the website feel fast and stable to a real visitor? They're measured not in a lab, but from real visitor experience, typically at the 75th percentile — meaning three quarters of visits perform at least this well.
For practical purposes, a basic grasp of all three values is enough to follow along in a conversation with an agency or make sense of an audit report.

The three metrics
in detail
- 01
LCP – Largest Contentful Paint
Measures how long it takes for the largest visible element on the page, usually an image or a headline, to fully load. Target: under 2.5 seconds. The most common cause of poor scores is uncompressed images and slow servers.
- 02
INP – Interaction to Next Paint
Measures how quickly the page responds to a user interaction like a click. Target: under 200 milliseconds. Poor scores usually come from too much, or poorly optimized, JavaScript blocking the main thread.
- 03
CLS – Cumulative Layout Shift
Measures how much elements on the page still shift around while loading — for example, when an image without a fixed size loads in and pushes the text below it down. Target: under 0.1. Fixed width and height for images and ad slots fixes the most common cause.
Bottom line:
Measure, then fix with intent.
All three values can be checked for free with tools like Google Search Console or PageSpeed Insights. The first step is always the same: measure the current state before working on individual causes.

FAQ
Frequently asked
questions.
Not necessarily. The PageSpeed score combines several factors into one number, while Core Web Vitals are specific values that can be based on real user data. A page can have a good lab score and still show weaker Core Web Vitals for real visitors, for example due to slow mobile connections.
Worth rechecking after any major change to the website — new features, larger images, a new plugin. Beyond that, a regular check every few months helps catch gradual regressions early.
