NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone. It sounds trivial — but it's one of the foundations local SEO most often fails on in practice. Even small mismatches between your website, Google profile, and directory listings can make it harder for Google to match your business correctly.
How small differences
have a big effect.
"Main St." and "Main Street" look identical to a person. To a search engine cross-referencing business data across many sources, they're two different strings. Pile up enough of these mismatches across directories, and trust in the accuracy of your data drops — and with it, local visibility.
Common sources of errors include an old address after a move, inconsistent spelling of street names, outdated phone numbers in long-forgotten directory listings, and a business name that's sometimes listed with a legal suffix and sometimes without.

How to find and fix
NAP errors
- 01
Define one single NAP wording
Fix name, address, and phone number exactly once — including the spelling of street, postal code, and legal form — and use that exact wording everywhere, with no variants.
- 02
Search Google for your own business name
A simple search for your business name often surfaces the worst mismatches in directory listings you'd long forgotten about.
- 03
Go through existing directory listings
Check known directories and industry portals specifically, and have outdated or duplicate listings corrected or merged.
- 04
Cross-check your website against your schema.org data
Legal notice, footer, and structured data (schema.org) must show exactly the same NAP wording as the Google profile — mismatches between website and profile weigh especially heavily.
- 05
Recheck periodically
After a move, a new phone number, or a change of legal form, it's worth running through the most important directories again.
Bottom line:
Consistency is trust-building.
NAP consistency isn't a one-time task, it's a habit: enter every new citation in exactly the same wording. The effort is manageable, and the effect on local trust with Google is measurable.
We maintain simnify's own canonical NAP record on exactly this principle. To see how we set that up for your business too, check out our Local SEO & Google Business Profile service.
FAQ
Frequently asked
questions.
Yes. Whether you use "St." or "Street" doesn't matter in itself — what matters is that the exact same variant appears everywhere. Fix the canonical wording once and then use it consistently, on your website and in every directory.
Many directories offer a way to claim a listing or request a correction even without the original access. For very old or orphaned listings, a short email to the directory operator asking for a correction or removal often works.
